You have many ways to give.  Below are listed but a few opportunities.  If you are not sure how you may wish to give, email us at ssisk@mahova.com.  Or, call us toll-free at 1-800-262-4644, extension 77223.

OUTRIGHT GIFTS

The following are some examples of the easiest ways to simply place into our hands funds or assets that can immediately help others.

GIFTS of CASH

Gifts of cash are the most common and often the simplest to make.  Checks should be made payable to the "Masonic Home of Virginia, Inc.", with a note in the memo section specifying your intent to support the New Century Fund.  This designation will allow the Board of Governors to utilize the monies in the most effective manner possible, where it is most needed at the time of donation.  These uses could include current operations, new construction or repair, or investment of the monies for future needs.

GIFTS by CREDIT CARD or BANK DEBIT

Donations may be charged to a credit card or may be made by a direct debit to the donor's bank account.  Such gifts may be one-time or may be established on an ongoing, monthly basis.

GIFTS of SECURITIES

Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds can provide special tax advantages.  These include a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift and avoidance of capital gains taxes.  The simplest and most efficient way to make a gift of any security is to instruct your broker or banker to transfer the stock to the Masonic Home of Virginia.  You or your broker may contact the Home for transfer instructions and brokerage account information.  In addition, you should notify the Masonic Home's Development Office (address below) when donating securities for a specific program or purpose.

GIFTS of REAL ESTATE

Gifts of homes, farms, and other real property can receive the same tax treatment as gifts of appreciated securities.  If property has appreciated over time, its sale may result in a substantial amount of capital gains taxes being due.  If debt-free property is transferred to the Masonic Home, the donor receives a current tax deduction for the appraised value of the property transferred.  The Home encourages real estate gifts that are not subject to liens or restrictions, which could affect its market value.

MEMORIAL OR TRIBUTE GIFTS

Any gift may be designated in memory or honor of a friend or loved one.  The family of the deceased, or person honored, will be notified by the Home of such gifts.

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS

You may be able to multiply the value of gifts by participating in a matching gift program provided through an employer or by a corporate board membership.  Companies may match charitable contributions at a one to one, or even a three to one ratio.  Your employer's personnel office can provide you information and forms to take advantage of this unique leveraging opportunity.  Gifts from retirees and spouses may also qualify for a match.  There is a simple rule for donors who are not sure whether their employer matches charitable gifts - "when in doubt...ask!"

UNITED WAY GIFTS

The Masonic Home is listed as a registered charity with several United Way campaigns, as listed below.  If you have questions about contributing to the Home through a Campaign, call us toll-free 1-800-262-4644, extension 223.  It is important to remember that you should send the Masonic Home a copy of your United Way pledge card to insure that your tax-deductible gift is credited to you and your lodge.  The CFC (the federal campaign) prohibits the release of donor names to any charity.  Therefore, Masons should send the Masonic Home a copy of their donor or pledge card, so that the gift will be recorded in their name, to credit both the donor and their lodge.  This is not a problem with nonfederal campaigns as much, since several of them supply the donor names with the money.  When in doubt, contact the Home.  Every gift should be recognized, because each one is very much appreciated.

PLANNED OR DEFERRED GIFTS

Another popular series of choices is what is commonly referred to as "planned gifts."  In these cases, the donor makes plans today to create funds for the Home to use in the future.  This builds a legacy of care at our Home, allowing the donor's generosity to be felt long after he or she is no longer with us.

BEQUEST by WILL or LIVING TRUST

The most common form of deferred or planned gift is a charitable bequest.  A will or living trust is a very personal matter and should be prepared with an attorney.  The following language is an example of how a bequest may be worded:

I give, devise and bequeath to the Masonic Home of Virginia, located at 4101 Nine Mile Road in Richmond, Virginia, _______ percent of my estate (or $______ or other personal or real property appropriately described) to be designated to the New Century Fund.

RETAINED LIFE ESTATE

You may generate a current income tax deduction by giving a home or farm to the Masonic Home, while retaining the right to occupy, rent or otherwise use the property during your lifetime.  The property will also be removed from your taxable estate.

GIFTS of INSURANCE

You may want to consider naming the Masonic Home of Virginia as beneficiary of a life insurance policy.  If the Home is named both the sole owner and the beneficiary, the contributor is eligible to receive an immediate charitable deduction for the policy's fair market value or the net premiums paid, whichever is less.  Additional premiums paid may also be tax deductible.

RETIREMENT PLAN GIFTS

Designation of the Masonic Home as primary or contingent (after a spouse) beneficiary of a private pension fund (e.g., IRA, SEP, 401(k), profit sharing plan) can result in the most "tax wise" testamentary gift possible.  This is because retirement accounts are subject to taxes that other estate assets may avoid.  Simply designate the Masonic Home of Virginia as beneficiary on your plan's "Beneficiary Designation" form.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTS

This type of charitable trust pays the charity a fixed amount or percentage of an asset for a term of years.  Thereafter, the assets are passed on to loved ones, and applicable estate, gift, and generation skipping taxes on the trust assets may be significantly reduced.

LIFE INCOME GIFTS

Numerous tax and financial benefits may be realized with a "life income gift", such as a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust.  The donor makes an irrevocable gift of cash, securities or property and receives income for him or herself (may include another beneficiary, such as a relative) for either life or other specified term of (1 to 20) years.  When the specified period ends, the remaining value of the trust goes to support the Home.

For a life income gift, the Donor receives an immediate tax deduction, subject to his/her personal limitations, equal to the fair market value of the cash or assets donated, less an IRS-approved calculation of the benefits that the donor will receive in the future.  Specific examples follow:

GIFT ANNUITY: You write a check or transfer stocks or securities to the Home. You and the Home sign an annuity agreement in which the Home agrees to pay you a fixed dollar amount at least quarterly for the rest of your life. This wonderful program is more fully described below.

UNITRUST: You write a check or transfer stocks or securities to a trust, naming the Home as the charitable beneficiary. You receive a quarterly income check from the trustee, for the rest of your life, equal to an agreed upon, fixed percentage of the annual value of the trust.

ANNUITY TRUST: You write a check or transfer stocks or securities to an annuity trust, naming the Home as the charitable beneficiary. You receive a quarterly income check from the trustee for the rest of your life, of a fixed dollar amount.

The Gift Annuity Program

The Board of Governors approved our Charitable Gift Annuity Program in 1998. A Charitable Gift Annuity is simply a written agreement between the donor and the Masonic Home of Virginia. The donor transfers assets, securities or cash to the Masonic Home. In exchange, the Home agrees to pay to the donor and spouse a fixed dollar amount every calendar quarter. The amount is based on the amount of the funds transferred and is also based on their ages at the date of the gift.  A part of the income stream is "tax-free return of principal" to the donors.

In addition to a guaranteed income stream, the donor receives a charitable deduction the year the gift is made and if necessary can be spread over five additional years. The deduction is based on the age of the donors and whether the gifted asset was a "long-term" or "short-term" asset.  Furthermore, if the gift is made with appreciated securities, part of the capital gain is tax-free; the tax on the gain is spread over the anticipated life of the annuity payment you receive each year.

The Charitable Gift Annuity has been used as an integral part of many estate and financial plans.  If you would like to receive a proposal from the Masonic Home of Virginia based on your personal situation, please contact the Development Department by emailing your name, address, date of birth, current IRS income tax rate and the amount you would like to gift to ssisk@mahova.com.

We will prepare a proposal and return it to you for your consideration.

PLEASE NOTE:  The Masonic Home of Virginia is supported by Virginia Masons.  As such, this website is NOT intended as a solicitation of gifts from residents of other states.  Further, while the Masonic Home of Virginia will accept gift annuity arrangements from Virginia residents, acceptance of gift annuities from residents of other states will require a review of that state’s gift annuity regulations.

The Philanthropy Protection Act of 1995

This Act requires the Home, as a charity, to notify all potential donors to a Gift Annuity Fund at the time of the solicitation, as outlined below:

Per any gift annuity agreement, guaranteed payments of the amount indicated will be made to the named annuitant(s) for life.

These payments are a general obligation of our organization, and they are backed by all of our assets.  At June 30, 2005 our total invested funds exceeded $71 million in market value.  These funds are invested in various investments such as stocks, bonds, money market and mutual funds.  In addition to the Finance Committee of our Board, the Home has under contract an external investment analyst who assists in providing investment oversight and advice.  The Masonic Home of Virginia was established in 1890.  Responsibility for governing the organization is vested in a Board composed of Virginia Masons who are either appointed by the Grand Master or who serve by virtue of their Masonic office.

Common investment funds managed by our organization are exempt from registration requirements of the federal securities laws, pursuant to the exemption for collective investment funds and similar funds maintained by charitable organizations under the Philanthropy Protection Act of 1995 (P.L. 104-62).  The above information in this website is provided to you in accordance with the requirements of that Act.  We would be pleased to provide any additional information at your request.

PLEASE NOTE:  Historically, the Masonic Home of Virginia has been supported by gifts from members of Virginia Masonic lodges.   As such, this website is not designed as a solicitation of gifts from residents of other states.

Donor Recognition

The Masonic Home recognizes in writing every gift received.  For gifts of certain amounts, additional recognition is made.  For more information on the levels of Donor Recognition, see the following web page: http://www.mahova.com/DonorRecognition.html.
