GIVING to HELP Imagine making someone’s retirement lifestyle more comfortable and getting a TAX DEDUCTION and possibly even receiving INCOME for LIFE. The Masonic Home exists because Masons and other donors GIVE. There are many ways to give. Below are listed but a few opportunities. If you are not sure how you may wish to give, email us at ssisk@mahova.com. Or, call us toll-free at 1-800-262-4644, extension 77223. OUTRIGHT GIFTS The following are some examples of
the easiest ways to simply place into our hands funds or assets that can
immediately help others. GIFTS of CASH Checks should be made payable to the "Masonic Home of Virginia, Inc." GIFTS by CREDIT CARD or BANK DEBIT Donations may be charged to a credit card or may be made by a direct debit to the donor's bank account. Such gifts may be one-time or may be established on an ongoing, monthly basis. GIFTS of SECURITIES Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds can provide special tax advantages. These include a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift and avoidance of capital gains taxes. GIFTS of REAL ESTATE Gifts of homes, farms, and other real property can receive the same tax treatment as gifts of appreciated securities. If property has appreciated over time, its sale may result in a substantial amount of capital gains taxes being due. MEMORIAL OR TRIBUTE GIFTS Any gift may be designated in memory or honor of a friend or loved one. The family of the deceased, or person honored, will be notified by the Home of such gifts. CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS Donors may be able to multiply the value of gifts by participating in a matching gift program provided through an employer or by a corporate board membership. Companies may match charitable contributions at a one to one, or even a three to one ratio. Your employer's personnel office can provide you information and forms to take advantage of this unique leveraging opportunity. Gifts from retirees and spouses may also qualify for a match. There is a simple rule for donors who are not sure whether their employer matches charitable gifts - "when in doubt...ask!" UNITED WAY GIFTS The Masonic Home is listed as a registered charity with
several Therefore, Masons should send the Masonic Home a copy of their donor or pledge card, so that the gift will be recorded in their name, to credit both the donor and their lodge. Central Virginia Area Combined Federal Campaign #36064 Local Gov't & Schools #259 United Way Services #3126 Combined Federal Campaign #36064 Potomac Combined Federal Campaign #36064 South Hampton Roads Combined Federal Campaign #36064 National Capital Area Combined Federal Campaign #36064 Rappahannock United Way Local Government Campaign #8034 United Way of Roanoke Valley #0313 United Way of Montgomery, Radford & Floyd #27151 PLANNED OR DEFERRED GIFTS Another popular series of choices is what is commonly referred to as "planned gifts." In these cases, the donor makes plans today to create funds for the Home to use in the future. This builds a legacy of care at our Home, allowing the donor's generosity to be felt long after he or she is no longer with us. BEQUEST by WILL or LIVING TRUST The most common form of deferred or planned gift is a charitable bequest. A will or living trust is a very personal matter and should be prepared with an attorney. The following language is an example of how a bequest may be worded: I give, devise and bequeath to the Masonic Home of Virginia, located at 4101 Nine Mile Road in Richmond, Virginia, _______ percent of my estate (or $______ or other personal or real property appropriately described) to be designated to the New Century Fund. RETAINED LIFE ESTATE A Donor may generate a current income tax deduction by giving a home or farm to the Masonic Home, while retaining the right to occupy, rent or otherwise use the property during the Donor’s lifetime. The property will also be removed from the donor’s taxable estate. GIFTS of INSURANCE A Donor may name the Masonic Home of Virginia as beneficiary of a life insurance policy. If the Home is named both the sole owner and the beneficiary, the contributor is eligible to receive an immediate charitable deduction for the policy's fair market value or the net premiums paid, whichever is less. Additional premiums paid may also be tax deductible. RETIREMENT PLAN GIFTS Designation of the Masonic Home as primary or contingent (after a spouse) beneficiary of a private pension fund (e.g., IRA, SEP, 401(k), profit sharing plan) can result in the most "tax wise" testamentary gift possible. This is because retirement accounts are subject to taxes that other estate assets may avoid. A Donor may simply designate the Masonic Home of Virginia as beneficiary on the plan's "Beneficiary Designation" form. LIFE INCOME GIFTS By establishing a life income gift, the Donor receives an immediate tax deduction, subject to his/her personal limitations, equal to the fair market value of the cash or assets donated, less an IRS-approved calculation of the benefits that the donor will receive in the future. Specific examples follow: GIFT ANNUITY: Donor writes a check or transfers stocks or securities to the Home, signing an annuity agreement in which the Home agrees to pay Donor an annual fixed dollar amount for life. Donor receives an immediate income tax deduction. UNITRUST: Donor writes a check or transfers stocks or securities to a trust, naming the Home as the charitable beneficiary. Donor receives a tax deduction and lifetime income equal to an agreed upon, fixed percentage of the annual value of the trust. ANNUITY TRUST: Donor writes a check or transfers stocks or securities to an annuity trust, naming the Home as the charitable beneficiary. Donor receives an immediate tax deduction and income for life, of a fixed dollar amount per year. This
